What is the difference between A106 and A106B pipes?
Having dealt with pipes and tubes, especially A 106 and A106B pipes, for several years, I am qualified to answer this question.
Though ASTM A106 and ASTM A 106 grade B pipes are standard American materials used in high-temperature and pressure applications, there are a few differences. Both carbon steel is best for use in the construction, oil & refinery industries.
Though ASTM A106 and ASTM A 106 grade B pipes are standard American materials used in high-temperature and pressure applications, there are a few differences. Both carbon steel is best for use in the construction, oil & refinery industries.
- Grade A of A 106 material has lower carbon content and many consider it consider as a softer steel easier to bend than grade B.
- Grade B has more carbon content than grade B
- Grade B pipes of A 106 carbon steel have a higher tensile strength of 415 MPa compared to the tensile strength of A of 330 MPa
- Grade B is the most popular choice over grade A of A 106 pipes because of its high temperature, and pressure resistance in many applications.
How many grades of A106 steel pipe are available?
There are three grades of A 106 steel pipe that transport fluids at high temperatures and pressure include:
- Grade A with lower carbon content and tensile strength than Grade B A 106 steel pipes
- Grade B, with higher carbon content and others like magnesium, has a higher tensile strength of up to 415 MPa.
- Grade C has a higher carbon content above 0.35% and higher tensile strength than grade B.
A106 galvanized pipe and ASTM A106 GR B pipe range from ¼ inch to 26 inches in outer diameter
Is the A106 pipe seamless or welded?
A-106 pipes are mostly seamless pipes. But ASTM A 106 B ERW pipes are also useful in a few specific applications. ASTM 106 seamless pipes, also known as ASME SA pipes, are useful in many applications in several sectors. The three different grades also offer various uses because of not being welded but only seamless pipes.
A106 seamless pipes, available in three grades and many sizes, are best suited for high-temperature and pressure applications. Also, ASTM A 106 Grade B welded pipes have many excellent properties for many applications.

What are the 9 main uses of the SA A106 GR B seamless pipe?
SA A106 gr B seamless pipe has many uses, including the 9 main uses.
- Are strong enough to be useful in construction industries
- Resist high temperatures to be ideal for oil & refinery industries
- Transport fluids in power, petrochemical, and other plants
- Helps to build ships and boilers
- As mild steel is best for use in many industrial plants
- Ideal for use in the food processing industry
- Best for use in the fabrication industry
- Suitable for many plumbing purposes
- Best for water supply systems, heating, and other general-purpose applications
ASTM A106 Grade B welded pipe and A106 pipe stock available for high-temperature service
What is the best coating for ASTM A106 GR B pipe?
There are many coatings for ASTM A 106 gr B pipe to have additional properties like corrosion resistance. A few surface treatments of these pipes include black coating, varnishing, FBE, epoxy, polyethylene, CRA Clad, and other coatings.
A106 galvanized pipe have zinc coating, which has high corrosion resistance to protect the pipes. Similarly, the FBE coating gives the pipes flexibility to bend easily in many water supply applications.
View temperature range for A106 carbon steel pipe from -20 to 400 degrees f
What temperature can A106 carbon steel pipe withstand?
A106 gr B material makes pipes for use in high temperatures. Also for use in low-temperature applications as low as -20F or -29C.
A106 carbon steel pipe is said to withstand high temperatures up to 800 F or 427 C. Hence But A 106 seamless pipes are suitable for applications with high-temperature service within the NPS range of 1/8 to 48 inches as per the ASME B36.10M specified average wall thicknesses.
